From URL to QR, in one paste

The single most common QR code: paste a URL, get a code, print it. No login, no redirect through some marketing platform that breaks next year. The code points where you say, and only where you say.

Static beats dynamic for most cases

Dynamic QR codes (the kind that point at a third-party redirect) let you change the target later — but you pay a monthly fee, the redirect provider can shut down, and they often track every scan. Static QRs (what Zen QR makes) point directly at your URL. As long as your URL exists, your QR works.

Use a short, stable URL

QR codes scale module density with URL length — a long URL becomes a denser, harder-to-scan code. Use the shortest stable URL you control: example.com beats example.com/landing-page-summer-2026. If you need rotation, host a redirect on your own domain.

Print considerations

Print at least 2cm × 2cm (~0.8") for close-range scanning. For posters viewed from 2 meters away, scale to 10cm × 10cm or more. Always leave a quiet zone (margin) of at least 4 modules — the white space around the code is part of the standard. Avoid printing on glossy surfaces in bright light.

Test before you print

Scan the printed proof with two or three different phones before doing a large run. Different camera apps have different tolerance for color, contrast, and damage — what scans fine in iPhone's Camera might fail in an older Android scanner. Test, then print.

    Paste the destination URL

    Use HTTPS. Use the shortest stable URL you control — example.com beats example.com/landing-page-summer-2026 for QR density and for memorability.

    Optionally route via your own redirect

    If you might need to change the destination later (event link, campaign URL), point the QR at a redirect URL on your domain and change the redirect server-side. Static QR + your redirect = poor man's dynamic QR.

    Generate at a print-friendly size

    Default 512 px is fine for screens. For posters and packaging, go to 1024 or 2048 px so the SVG/PNG holds up at large physical sizes.

    Test before mass printing

    Scan the proof with iOS Camera and a generic Android QR reader. If both work cleanly under normal indoor light, you're safe to print at scale.

    Track scans (if you need to)

    Add a redirect on your domain that logs the hit, then redirects. You get scan counts, the customer keeps speed and trust, and you don't share data with a third-party QR analytics service.

Can I track scans?
Not with a static QR — by design, your URL is the destination. If you need scan analytics, route the QR through a redirect URL on a server you control and add analytics there.
Can I change the URL after printing?
No — the URL is baked into the QR pattern. To change destinations, point the QR at a stable redirect URL you can update server-side.
How long should the URL be?
Under 50 characters is ideal. Up to ~200 still scans cleanly. Past 300, the QR gets dense enough that older cameras struggle.
Should I use HTTP or HTTPS?
HTTPS, always. Modern browsers warn or block HTTP and the saved bandwidth from omitting "s" isn't worth a security warning.
